Music to help focus?

I find that music helps cut out distractions so that you can focus. (or it at least does so for me anyway.) If I listen to music I like however, I just end up listening to the songs instead of working, which is the opposite of what I want.

I need instrumental music I can listen to, to cut out distractions around me, but doesn't distract me itself. I don't like listening to classical music like Beethoven and Bach. An example of what I wanted was that music that plays in the Sims when you are building a house. Any ideas where I could get this music on a CD or where I could download it? (The Sims music itself would be great, but I tried extracting it from the CD and it didn't work. If there's a way to get it into iTunes please let me know.)

Thanks for all your help.

Music to help focus?
Did you know that it is possible to "extract" the music from The Sims CD??!! I was so excited when I figured it out/how simple it was and now I will share it with you.

For this example, I am using the CD The Sims: House Party

-Insert the CD into your computer.

-Go to Windows Explorer (or Finder if you are running a Mac)

-Click on the CD to view contents

-A bunch of folders and files will pop up, open the folder called "Music"

-This will open up a bunch more files and folders. There will be two folders, one is called "Modes", the other one is called "Stations"

-"Modes" contains all the music from "buy mode", "build mode", etc. All you have to do is open each individual folder and copy/paste the music files into your music player (iTunes, etc)

-"Stations" contains all the music that is available on the Sims stereos that you can buy for this house (Latin, Beach, etc). Again all you have to do is open each individual folder and copy/paste the music files into your music player.

-Voila, you have access to all the Sims music without having to run the game!! I'm sure you can do similar processes on different versions/upgrades of the game, but I haven't tried it myself.

*NOTE* if you don't want to go through all this trouble, simply insert The Sims CD into a stereo system that can play MP3 CDs and it will play the songs directly from the game CD. This way you can even have The Sims in your car as you drive!!!!!

For other music you might like try Enya (I recommend the albums "Amarantine", "A Day Without Rain" and "Watermark") I use Enya all the time to help me focus.

Even though you may not like classical music, I would recommend Chopin and Debussy as their music is quite different from the likes of Beethoven and Bach. You can find a lot of Chopin and Debussy that is solo piano which I find is great for focusing. Some songs I recommend are:

Chopin: any nocturnes, Piano Concerto #1 (specifically the 2nd movement for relaxing/focusing), Piano Concerto #2 (specifically 2nd movement again) by the way, try listening to all movements of both concertos, they'll blow you away and possibly change your view on classical music!!

Debussy: Clair de Lune, Reverie, Arabesque #1, La fille aux cheveux de lin, Valse Romantique

...to name a few

Hope this helps, and enjoy!!
Reply:Well, there's plenty of classical music out there that sounds nothing like Bach or Beethoven.

Try Romantic era: Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky (I esp. recommend Pictures at an Exhibition.)

Gustav Holst's suite The Planets and Suite in E flat for Military Band (as well as the Second Suite in F) are good listening.

Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances are wonderful. Also try his tone poems, like Pines of Rome

Copland's Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra as well as Appalachian Spring are absolutely wonderful.

All of the above can be found on itunes. :-)
Reply:i have a mp3 player

Try the pop/rock section or new age/other.
